The american version of Danny and the Dressmakers were Half Japanese, except I rather suspect that Danny and the Dressmakers could actually play their instruments if they wanted to; this is not the case with Jad and David fair's crew of misfits.
"The only chord I know is the one that goes from the guitar to the amplifier" (J.Fair)

The music is a melange of stream of consciousness improv and primal scream (not the crap group) non-rock and non-roll. Its meaningless and primitive, a lo-fi portal straight from the art neanderthal that lurks within all of us.The insiders outsider punk that those sex pistols should have sounded like if you read all their press. Its also funny too!
"Tuning the guitar is kind of a ridiculous notion. If you have to wind the tuning pegs to just a certain place, that implies that every other place would be wrong. But that's absurd. How could it be wrong? It's your guitar and you're the one playing it. It's completely up to you to decide how it should sound." - David Fair, Half Japanese

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "Sonic Portation" (2009)

I don't beliiiiiiiieeeeeve IT! Ya Ho Wha 13 ,sans Father Yod of course, have made a new album!!!!????? And they are touring!!!!!
Note the photographic evidence contained here, of a gig in L.A!
As for the recording, i can now confirm that they haven't lost it.....except mentally that is.
Within these mp3's you can find music that hasn't lost any of its cosmic edge, or acid freakiness, in fact is could easiliy be a record released today by any of the Kaballah Doom fraternity, such as the magnificent OM!
I would rate this as their third best effort, behind "Penetration", and "Im Gonna Take You Home".
Go and tell your friends, if you have any.......which you probably don't if you like Ya Ho Wha 13!!!!!

Father Yod and the Spirit of '76 (1973-74)

DIY music ,i'll admit did not exist only between 1978 and 1983.......the hippies (spit!), were very adept at self producing their own releases too.My favourite of which was the various releases by cult leader Father Yod and his hippie followers.
Father Yod was really James Edward Baker ,born on July 4, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Baker earned the Silver Star as United States Marine in WWII and became an expert in Jujitsu. He moved to California to become a Hollywood stuntman and became influenced by the Nature Boys, a Los Angeles-based group of beatniks who lived a natural lifestyle, maintained vegetarian diets, and lived "according to Nature's Laws."Baker also studied philosophy, religion, and esoteric spiritual teachings, even becoming a Vedantic monk for a time. He later became a devoted follower of Yogi Bhajan, a Sikh spiritual leader and teacher of Kundalini Yoga.
In 1969, Baker founded the Source Restaurant in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles, on the Sunset Strip. The restaurant served organic vegetarian food, with such celebrity regulars as John Lennon, Julie Christie, and Marlon Brando.Founded in 1973 in the Los Angeles area, Ya Ho Wha 13, otherwise known Yahowha 13 is a psychedelic rock band fronted by Father Yod, spiritual leader of a religious cult/commune called the Source Family. Ya Ho Wha without the vowels and spaces reduces to YHWH, the tetragrammaton. The band recorded nine LPs full of their extreme psychedelic sound with tribal drums and distorted guitars, some of which were completely unrehearsed jam sessions, others which contained more conventional rock songs.Members of The Source Family, who lived in the Hollywood Hills in the early 1970s, decided to fuse their musical talents and spirituality by forming an improvisational, psychedelic music group. They began to press LPs in 1973, most of which were recorded after hours of meditation at 3:00-6:00 a.m. in a soundproofed garage that served as the musicians’ studio at the family's communal residence. All of the records with Father Yod’s participation were completely improvised, with no rehearsals or overdubs. Most of the albums were pressed in small runs of only 500 to 1000 copies on the Higher Key label. They were sold to the general public in Father Yod’s popular vegetarian Source Restaurant for $10 each. Though only nine LPs were produced and released, it is rumored that more than 65 albums were recorded by the group but were lost over the years.
The band changed members occasionally, morphing into various incarnations, from Father Yod and the Spirit of ’76 to Ya Ho Wha 13 to The Savage Sons of Ya Ho Wha, Yodship, and Fire Water Air; but the key players were always the same: (Djin Aquarian on guitar, Octavious Aquarian on drums, and Sunflower Aquarian on bass). Father Yod does not appear on all their album releases, but for those on which he participates, he handles lead vocals and percussion, via a kettle drum. Former pop star Sky Saxon of The Seeds had joined the Source Family in 1973 and occasionally appeared on the band's recordings.
Yod had established a council of 13 women and later sealed these women as his wives. On August 25, 1975, despite having no previous hang-gliding experience, YaHoWha used a hang glider to leap off a 1300-foot cliff on the eastern shore of Oahu.He crash-landed on the beach and died nine hours later. After three days of vigil, YaHoWha was cremated. The albums from the first incarnation of the father yod nutters was, Father Yod And The Spirit Of 76. The downloads of which can be found below.
BUT, i would recommend the Yo Ha Wha 13 records following this post as the place to start. Namely "Penetration- an aquarian symphony" and "I'm Gonna Take You Home", being the places to start. They being far superior and weirder than any of the others.

"Kohoutek" (1973) download

"Contraction" (1974) download

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "Penetration - An Aquarian Symphony" (1974)

Peace ,Love, and Understanding my Arse!.....All those hippies were about was how to invent some pseudo-philosophy that will seduce young women into bed......and what happens then is pretty well summed up in the title of this lp.
As awful as these misguided sexual predators and their victims were, they made grade "A" aural loonicy that is a shear delight......no-one is allllll bad. This record should have made history as the first music to be sectioned.
The Gong sounds alone on "Ho" should be presented with an award for the best aural experience since Godzilla screeched his(or was it a her?) first gut scraping vowel sound."Yodzilla" seems an appropriate noun for that gong.
'Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony' was intended to be Ya Ho Wha 13's masterwork, acting as a Merkabah of sorts to elevate its listeners to a heightened state of consciousness - & I must say, it does the trick!
Take your meds and revel in the Outsider DIY joy that is "Penetration - an aquarian symphony"! (That Title!!!....ugh!.....Shudder!!!!)

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "I'm Gonna Take You Home" (1974)

Outsider DIY hippie monolith of a record.Note standard cult leader pose with teenage victim.......i think i'm gonna be sick. But i am prepared to put that aside, because this music is definitely "OUT THERE"! Contains some of the best acid guitar playing that transcends incompetence that you are ever likely to hear. This record is an audio record of a group of minds being flushed away. Are there really people like this, or are they just as manufactured as the kids from fame? What i wanna know is did the kids from Ya Ho Wha 13 go to a entertainment training facility to do this?..........i'm not totally sure but i probably think........not!

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "To The Principles For The Children" (1974)

Sort of disturbing this; all those kids on the cover are probably Father Yod's, fathered under the normal cult conditions of cynical brainwashing techniques on dysfunctional and naive teenage women. That said, and although i can't listen to Gary Glitter anymore (The Glitter Band excepted), this insane spontaneous outsider DIY acid rock drivel is up there with evolution and the creation of the cosmos, as one of the greatest acidents ever to stumble into existence.
And yes, he really did die in a bizarre hang gliding accident!!!!
Track Listing:
1. Side A (16:58)
2. Side B (10:37)
Personnel:
- Father Yod / vocals, kettle drum, gong
- Djinn / guitars
- Sunflower / bass
- Octavius / drums

This is a rather more conventional acid rock record, which, apart from the great cover, is not recommended.....unless you like conventional music with a sixities vibe that is.

Doof - " Exist " (Namedrop Records NR1 ) 10" EP ,1981.
Phillip Johnson, who regularly appeared on Deleted records compilations, and released several c-90's during 79-80, is the man behind Doof! He and Paul Platypus ( of DIY supergroup The Reflections), created this audio mumble, that must have been recorded under a duvet or something equally acoustically deadening. That something as dysfunctional as this ever made it onto ten inch vinyl is as much a miracle as the sub-genius that is contained within these grooves. This record has the logic of Dreams, and that is a quality which David Lynch and the like spend millions of dollars, and years of thought to achieve......Doof could shit surrealism in their lunch hour, and Dada is just their father.Nothing extraordinary for Doof.......who the hell were they anyway.........i'm glad i dont know.

1- Brighton pt.1
2- Nine Years old
3- Brighton pt.2
4- On it In it.

The Door and the Window - " Permanent Transience " (NB Records NB2) Tape,1979.

Simply had to make this available to a slightly wider audience on this indifferent rock we call "earth".
What we have here is an even rougher, ramshackled version of Detailed Twang, less "song" orientated, and improvised. This hissy monolith, neigh, rosetta stone of DIY sounds like it was recorded using a cheap microphone pressed against a glass against a wall from an adjoining room; as if we are evesdropping on some nutters next door playing with their unaware musician friends equipment whilest he was out.
Its sort of live too,and we get another classic ,even more wobbley ,version of "He Feels Like A Doris".And the version of "subculture Fashion Slaves sounds like it was recorded in a cardboard box, wot more can a young person want?.....eh?
Classic C-60 cassette sounds that i am sure will become the mode again in the very near future,or so help me god.
Thanks Lord Bendle.
